Madrid's most famous boulevard, Gran Vía ("Great Way") has been compared to New York City's Broadway and London's West End. Decked in early-to-mid-20th century architecture, the street and its buildings are a magnificent sight, both in the daytime and afterhours, when the late traffic and Madrid's most famous skyscrapers-such as the Edificio Carrión, topped by the iconic Schweppes sign-light up the night sky. Originating at Calle de Alcalá and terminating at Plaza de España, the street, one-and-a-half kilometres long, is crammed with shops and restaurants, both Spanish and foreign, in a seemingly endless chain of extravagant buildings. Gran Via is full of shops, bars and restaurants and being so central you are perfect striking distance of all the major Madrid attractions. It is a busy part of town but there is always something exciting happening.
